KIDS MESSENGER BAG

When I made the backpack purses for my DIL's for Mothers Day I realized they were just a little too big for my granddaughter so I found this simple pattern for a really cute messenger bag for a child and put that together today.
With the exception of one step, cutting out the fabric for this project takes longer than the sewing part. I had black double sided quilted fabric from the backpack project so I used that but it is not necessary to do so, the pattern listed below will show you how to make this bag with regular cotton fabric.  The part that is somewhat difficult is at the end when you put the bag together and it is time to attach the lining.  Once you have done this it's easy but the first time you will have to put on your thinking cap - just follow her directions and it will come out perfect.
Very quickly you end up with a nice, lined messenger bag that any little girl would like (or at least I hope so!). You will note the totem pull in the first photo.  The bag that I made for the DIL's and myself had a zipper and I used the totem as a zipper pull but the messenger bag has no zipper so I just attached the pull to a little jump ring that I had attached to the side of the bag.
The other thing that I did different than the pattern is that I attached a hook and loop fastener to close the bag.
This is a June 10th post script - Ready to give the bag to my seven year old granddaughter and I just do not think the Velcro works so I took it apart and did what I should have done to begin with put in a magnetic closure. They are so easy to install even if you have to go back and retrofit.
Will give you the link below for the free pattern and the Etsy seller who makes these wonderful monogram patches.
