WAFFLE MIX IN A LOVELY JAR

This is a very inexpensive yet lovely Christmas gift and is a nice way to say Merry Christmas.  This is just a mason quart canning jar with a water-slide label of a beautiful deer, but you could chose any label you like.  If you saw my post of the Snowman Cookie Jar I noted that I had added another image on the label as to not waste the label.  If you print the waterslide labels you can save them for later if you have NOT put the coating on them.  Once you put the coating on them you have to use them or they will crack. Click on the link above to go to the Snowman Cookie Jar and find instructions for the waterslide label.

Anyway the jar is filled with a really yummy waffle mix that is very easy to put together.
You start out with a simple mason jar.

These are all the ingredients needed for the waffle mix, Baking powder, corn starch, AP flour, baking soda, salt and sugar.

Recipe:
7 1/2 cups AP flour (I always use King Arthur, worth the $)
2 1/2 cups corn starch
5 tablespoons of sugar
5 teaspoons baking powder
5 teaspoons table salt
2 1/2 teaspoons baking soda

Put all these ingredients into a large bowl and using a wire whisk, whisk until all the ingredients are combined.

To make a batch of waffles for every 1 1/4 cups of the mix add the following:  1egg, 1 cup buttermilk, 1/3 cup melted butter and 1 tsp vanilla.  Mix the we ingredients and then fold into the dry and make yourself some really yummy waffles!
This jar has enough waffle mix for two batches.  If you do not want to use the jar you could just put the mix into zip lock bags, print out the instructions on a label and affix to the zip lock and put them into gift bags and maybe add some real maple syrup and you could call it "Breakfast in a Bag."

Cooks note:  I have only two recipes that call for this much corn starch and they are both yummy, this one and Junior's Cheesecake and well, that is over-the-top good and my favorite cheesecake but that's another post another time.

On my post of November 29th (Cookie Jar Gift) you will find instructions for the waterslide label. All I did here is add the label to the jar, tie on the gingham ribbon, a little greenery, a snippet of tinsel ribbon, add the instruction label and it's all done.

  1. Hi Joy
Hopped over from Graphics Fairy. Love your waffle-in-a-jar Mason jar project. I love creating these gifts, and my friends love receiving them! One of my favorite containers I used is a tennis ball can! I made Brownies-in-a-Jar for my tennis group. If you're interested, here's the link to my post:

  2. Visiting via the Graphics Fairy and I absolutely love this idea ... as long as they have a waffle iron! I guess it could be pancakes or anything! The graphic truly makes it special. Lovely!

  5. Hello Realdoozy - it is a waterslide decal and if you click on the COOKIE JAR GIFT post there are instructions. If you would like further instructions or have anymore questions please feel free to either leave another comment or at the top of the blog send me an email. These decals can be a little tricky but after you do a couple they are not hard at all, you just have to be sure and follow all instructions from beginning to end. Thanks for asking. j.

  7. How do I print the recipe on the jar lid. I am so technically challenged. A printable download would be amazing. I love your idea, it's great!

  9. I added another photo near the end of the post. For right now the best I can do is to tell you to copy and paste the label from that photo. You can either put several on a big label or just print it out and trim around it and use glue to attach to the lid. Wish I could do better for you. Hopefully after the first of the year you will be able to print items like this and recipes right off of the blog. Thank you so much for the interest, I am sure your project will turn out wonderful. On my way to make Christmas Jelly for tomorrow's post. j.

    1. Pattie I would be more than happy to try and send these to you in a format that you can use. I do all my work in Corel Draw so unless you have that I will have to change to another file extension. Your email does not show up when replying here so please send me an email at howdjd@gmail.com and I will make sure that one way or another you get what you want.j.

    2. BTW Pattie there is a print/pdf button at the top of the post right under the Pinterest button. I am working now on making a sheet of the lid instructions in Microsoft Word. That way you could print them on on a full sheet label which is what I did for my jar. Just let me know what you need. j.
